Ice Dam Removal

With Low Pressure Steam

Ice Dam Steaming (a roofer-owned company) emphasizes the importance of learning the proper and improper ice dam removal methods prior to hiring a service. Educating yourself on these techniques is crucial to safeguarding the health and longevity of your roof. Learning (by reading this page) will also save you money.

Incorrect methods of ice dam removal such as hammers, picks, chisels, hatchets or hot pressure washers (any form of impact) will immediately damage your roof and shorten its lifespan. In roofing terms, this is called premature roof failure. Roofs are fragile, especially in the cold.

Impact on your roof can cause both immediate and long-term damage. Pressure washers, in particular, can even cut holes in roofing materials. Residential roofs with asphalt shingles are especially vulnerable and fragile in the winter. Any impact can and will damage, loosen and remove the limestone. Limestone is the sand like material used to protect the asphalt from the sun. Without this protection your shingles will look terrible, dry up and curl, and won’t last their intended lifespan. Therefore, it’s imperative to choose a professional and experienced service like ours that guarantees no damage. Ice Dam Steaming is proud to offer the industry’s first (and currently only) 100% zero-damage satisfaction guarantee.

The safest and most effective method for residential ice dam removal and commercial ice dam removal is by utilizing true low-pressure steam. Using steam, is gentle yet efficient, preventing damage and ensuring the integrity of your roof. Our steam method uses low-pressure at 100 psi and high temps of 290-300 degrees Fahrenheit. Our steamers always arrive with pressure and temperature gauges to verify these important numbers. Once water has been turned to steam and applied at low pressure it loses its ability to impact and damage materials.

Steam is also the only method that can easily clear ice from the gutters, downspouts and drains and ensure proper drainage. We have seen countless roofs and gutter systems damaged or destroyed from methods like chisels, hammers and pressure washers.

By choosing a professional, experienced, and trusted ice dam removal service like ours, you can protect your property from the costly damages done by so called “experts.” When selecting an ice dam removal service, it is essential to choose a company with trained, professional technicians (two people per job) who have a reputation for integrity. Our trained, two person crews truly care about the well-being of your property. Avoid paying an hourly price for just one person, as this line of work requires two people to be done safely and efficiently. Ice Dam Steaming is who we are and it’s what we do!

Ice Dam Steaming is the company most highly preferred by knowledgeable insurance companies and property owners. and Ice dam steaming is the method preferred by all experienced roofers like us. Contact us now or call one of our two ICE-DAM phone #’s.

Avoiding Wrong Methods

The steam method for ice dam removal originated in Minnesota (MN) over 60 years ago and has since spread across the USA. This method has been proven effective in various climates and on all residential and commercial roof types, making it the preferred choice for homeowners and business owners alike.

However, the process of ice dam steaming is not well known in most other states around the US. Therefore, many companies are able to fool property owners and show up with high PSI hot pressure washers and claim they are “steaming.” These companies damage roofs and take way more of your money than necessary because they remove ice slowly compared to a steamer.

Hot pressure washers are not designed to remove ice dams from roofs. The pressure is far too high, generally 1000-3000 psi (vs 100 psi) that’s approximately 10-30 times too much pressure! Also, hot pressure washers cannot produce steam temperatures, generally only 150-190 degrees F continuously. This is basically hot water at very high pressure. Highly pressurized hot water should never be used on roofs! A steamer designed for ice dams will run at 100 psi and 290-300 degrees F continuously. Furthermore, a true steamer will never be sold with a trigger gun. If you see a trigger on the gun (like a car wash) and a quick coupler (to change nozzles) on the end of the gun do not allow that equipment up on your roof.

There are many other ways to identify these fake steamers and avoid roof damage. But possibly the best way to avoid these fake steamers would be to hire us. Contact us here or call either of our ICE-DAM numbers.
